Shabbat 128a – What do ostriches eat?

It has been way too long…

ostrich-headThe Talmud is discussing items which may be used as food for different animals. If an object can be used as food then it can be moved on Shabbat.

אף מטלטלין שברי זכוכית, מפני שהוא מאכל לנעמיות

One may even move glass shards because they are food for ostriches

And I found confirmation on this website:-

What they eat.

Ostriches will eat almost anything shiny. Some have been known to eat watches, bottle caps, glass, locks, bicycle valves, and even alarm clocks. Some people think that these ratites can actually digest metal, but that’s not true. The metal stays in their gizzards, and is used to grind and digest their real food, which includes small reptiles and rodents.

You learn something new everyday – especially with daf yomi!!!
